"SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER, AND UNCUT"

South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut

I'm gonna break a big rule right now. Typically, when I write my reviews, I don't write any spoilers. I don't even get into what the movie is about because I want you to walk into the movie completely blind. Also, I like that my readers can read my reviews and know that I won't give away the story. Well, here's my semi-spoiler: Satan has a musical number... and it's incredible! It's the kinda musical number you'd hear in a big time Disney animated film. The fact that Satan breaks out into song is one of the many hilarious surprises in "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut."

I included the semi-spoiler because I wanted to give you an idea of the kinda wackiness to expect in this movie. A lot has been said about this movie being R-rated, and how much the creators have pushed the envelope, but the "South Park" movie isn't as vulgar as it is twisted. Don't get me wrong, it IS vulgar, but my God, it's just so out there! In other words, the R-rating is well-deserved, and this is NOT a movie for kids (though I'll be honest about it, kids would love it).

"South Park" is the creation of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and it's a TV show that airs on Comedy Central. There's a whole legend about how it came to be, and how George Clooney is a major reason for the show's success, and how the original animated short called "The Spirit of Christmas" became so popular... but I'm not gonna get into all that. Just rest assured that this movie is damn funny, and it's bound to offend somebody, if not EVERYbody.

Like the TV show, almost all the male voices are done by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and almost all the female voices are done by Mary Kay Bergman (who has lent her voice to quite a few Disney movies). Also, there are tons of celebrity voice cameos... but they're rather hard to find. George Clooney's is pretty easy to figure out, as is Eric Idle's. But try to figure out when Minnie Driver's voice pops up, or Brent Spiner's, or Dave Foley's, or Mike Judge's (Mike Judge is the creator of "Beavis and Butt-Head").

Just a side note: All prints of "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" have the trailer for "Sleepy Hollow" attached. For those who aren't like me (I've been following this film online ever since it was announced), "Sleepy Hollow" is the new movie by Tim Burton (my favorite director) that's gonna be released on Thanksgiving of this year. It stars Johnny Depp (anytime he and Tim Burton get together, it's a classic... look at "Edward Scissorhands" and "Ed Wood") as "Ichabod Crane," Christina Ricci, and Christopher Walken as "The Headless Horseman." Also, Andrew Kevin Walker co-wrote the screenplay. He's the man who wrote "Seven" and "8mm." See the "South Park" movie just to see this incredible trailer!!

Anyway...

"South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" was written by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Pam Brady (the creative consultant for the TV show, as well as a co-producer for "Just Shoot Me"), and they have made a surprisingly good movie buried beneath all the outrageousness. I've seen it twice already, and both times I laughed out loud throughout the movie. It drags at times, and it's far from Oscar-worthy (though I'd argue that some of the music DOES deserve a nomination), but it's a movie that most people will enjoy. This movie has to be seen to be believed.
