I was fortunate enough to catch an advanced screening of this movie, but since it was free, I couldn't bitch that the first two minutes had no audio. It pretty much consisted of what you see the guys do on "Saturday Night Live" with the familiar song and everything, but I really wanted to enjoy that. Oh well.
Though it IS thin, there's a story here. I won't say what it is, but I was satisfied with it. It was written by Will Ferrell (the tall one of the head-bobbing duo), Chris Kattan (the shorter one of the head-bobbing duo), Steve Koren, filmmaker (and one of the producers of this film) Amy Heckerling, and, interestingly enough, Jim Carrey, an uncredited writer for the movie.
"A Night at the Roxbury" went through two directors (I don't know why yet). The first two weeks were directed by Peter Markle (he did lots of TV work as well as directing "Bat 21" and "Hot Dog: The Movie"). The rest of the movie was directed by John Fortenberry, who directed a lot of TV stuff, but his only foray into feature filmmaking is with "Jury Duty." That's right, folks. A Paulie Shore movie.
The cast includes Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan as the two morons (Chris Kattan is simply hilarious here, and if he plays his cards right, he can be the next "SNL" guy to make it big), Richard Grieko, Dan Hedaya, and Loni Anderson. There are a couple of other "SNL" cast members here, and a few cameos, one in particular that's probably too long to be considered a cameo, but I was surprised to see him in this movie nonetheless.
I know that
I'm gonna have to defend this movie. It really IS a bad movie, but I enjoyed
it thoroughly. Chris Kattan just cracked me up. I say you should give it
a try. This dumb little movie may surprise you.
