I'm not gonna spend a lotta time on this review. It's a chick flick, more specifically, a romantic comedy. I hate romantic comedies, or at least, I hate the typical ones, and trust me when I tell you, "Two Weeks Notice" is a VERY typical romantic comedy.
I didn't wanna see this movie at all, but my seeing it was somewhat of a compromise. A week or two earlier, "Maid in Manhattan" opened, and that movie looked horrific, it looked like the epitome of the terrible, shitty, predictable romantic comedy, a cookie cutter of the genre. My girlfriend, fortunately, didn't wanna see that piece of shit, so when she told me that we were seeing "Two Weeks Notice," she said, "hey, I coulda made you see 'Maid in Manhattan' with me." Proving that I have balls the size of raisins, and that she wears the pants in the relationship, I nodded my head, and agreed to see "Two Weeks Notice." Surprise surprise, even though I wasn't too thrilled with the movie, she may have even liked it less than me!
This movie stars Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant, two movie stars who, collectively, have probably been in about a billion romantic comedies. They're both charming and funny and cute and lovable and huggable and blah blah blah blah blah. It's a romantic comedy, okay? They play the kinds of characters you always see in romantic comedies.
"Two Weeks Notice" was written and directed by Marc Lawrence. He's the guy who wrote "Miss Congeniality" and "Forces of Nature" (a movie I kinda liked, because it's NOT a typical romantic comedy), both of which starred Sandra Bullock. This is his feature film directorial debut, and although it's not brilliant, he did an okay job. Truth be told, I didn't totally hate the movie. For the first three-quarters, I kinda liked it. The characters were charming, a couple of the lines were funny, and it was pretty damn entertaining. But then it dug itself deeper into the romantic comedy hole, and in the end, you get the obligatory and pathetic "I'm in love with you" speech that has me wanting to head for the hills. Ugh!
It's got some cute scenes, funny moments, and the two leads are very charming, but in the end, it's just another freakin' romantic comedy. It coulda been worse, though. I coulda been dragged to that abortion, "Maid in Manhattan."
