"GOING ALL THE WAY"

Going All the Way

"Going All the Way" is a(nother) coming of age independent film, but this one is set a little after the Korean War. It stars Jeremy Davies (the chronic masturbator in "Spanking the Monkey"), Ben Affleck (the lesbian-chasing comic book artist in "Chasing Amy"), and there's even a small part for Rose McGowan (the star of "The Doom Generation," but she's probably best known as Neve Campbell's often chilly best friend in "Scream").

Most of the screen time is dedicated to Jeremy Davies (does he masturbate in EVERY movie he's in???), but he's probably the least interesting person. He's a dork in the movie, but he's SO dorky that he's simply unpleasant to watch. His friend, played by Ben Affleck, is more interesting, and far more amusing. I think most would agree that the most interesting scenes are the ones with Rose McGowan, but she end up in no more than five minutes in the movie.

This movie was directed by Mark Pellington, who's best known for directing music videos. Pellington is the one who directed "Jeremy," the fantastic video for Pearl Jam. Too bad MTV made him edit out a key shot which leaves many viewers thinking that the title character of the video shot the other students when in fact, he shot himself. See, there was a shot where "Jeremy" puts the gun into his mouth, but MTV, being the corporate wusses that they are, asked Pellington to get rid of the shot. Pathetic. Yeah, MTV is SOOOO Cool! Corporate pseudo-hip assholes. ANYWAY, Pellington does some of the typical music video director stuff here, and even though some may find it distracting, it was at least interesting.

I don't wanna make it sound like I'm totally trashing this movie. Ben Affleck, Amy Locane (a "Melrose Place" alum), and Rose McGowan were very good, and it had some really good moments.

I'm not sure what I expected from this movie, but I wasn't expecting a lot. I pretty much sat in the theater wanting to be entertained, and I suppose I was at times, but not as much as I wanted to be.
