I watched "GI Jane" knowing exactly what was gonna happen next. It wasn't because I heard so much about it, but because that's how predictable it is. It has everything that a standard military movie has: The Drill Sergeant who may or may not be an evil bastard, the main star working out with great intensity set to music, the confrontation between said main star and Drill Sergeant (By the way, I write "Drill Sergeant," but that's because I'm an idiot who knows nothing about the military. In the movie, he's referred to as "Master Chief" or something like that), and of course, there's the inevitable "war" even if it takes place during peace time. All that happens in this movie. The thing is, I personally don't mind a predictable movie if I'm entertained. That's all I ask of a movie: Entertain me. If it does more, great! But all I want is to be entertained. "GI Jane" was very entertaining.
Demi Moore's acting was very good. I never thought she was a bad actress, so I expected a good performance out of her. Anne Bancroft is a great actress (has it become politically incorrect to say "actress"?), and it was fun to watch her as a snappy politician. Viggo Mortensen is downright scary as the Drill Sergeant Master Chief guy. Still, the best performance is by Ridley Scott. There are some great images, and he really knows how to set the mood. Especially when he throws in all that damn rain. The only thing is, he threw in some dizzying zooms during the "war" scene that I'm not so sure about. I kinda liked it, but it was a bit distracting.
By the way, beware of the intense confrontation that I mentioned earlier. It's quite intense, and may have some members of the audience turning their heads.
When it
comes right down to it, this is a predictable movie that provided me with
about 130 minutes of entertainment. Kudos to all involved, especially
Demi Moore for being one of the producers, for doing a great acting job,
and for looking sexy with a shaved head.
NOTE: Okay, this is my second movie review. I haven't really improved a whole lot yet, but give it time. I'll get better, you'll see.
