"EDTV"

EdTV

It's a shame that so many people are gonna compare "EdTV" to "The Truman Show." They're both very good movies, but they're very different. Besides, "EdTV" is more like a fictionalized version of MTV's "The Real World" (which got really shitty after the first three season). Anyway, I really liked "EdTV."

This movie has a great all-star cast. Mathew McConaughey is great here as, well, he's white trash. Woody Harrelson is just perfect as his older brother. Jenna Elfman (from TV's "Dharma and Greg," a TV show I don't watch regularly, but the episodes I've seen are hilarious) really surprised me playing a role very different from the ditzy roles I usually see her play. Elizabeth Hurley, Dennis Hopper, Rob Reiner, Sally Kirkland, Adam Goldberg... all great. The standouts were Martin Landau as Ed's hilarious stepfather and Ellen DeGeneres as the program director. In the trailers before "EdTV," I saw two movie previews that also had Ellen DeGeneres in supporting roles. I think that despite having her show cancelled (and supposedly "retiring" from working in Hollywood with Anne Heche, who has ALSO been getting a lotta work), she has a bright future in movies. I'm rooting for her. By the way, "Happy Days" alum Don Most has a role in this movie.

"EdTV" was directed by one of Hollywood's best directors, Ron Howard, and it was written by two of Hollywood's best writers, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel. They worked together with Howard on "Night Shift," "Splash," "Parenthood," and "The Paper," but they also worked on movies not directed by Ron Howard, such as "City Slickers," "A League of Their Own," and "Greedy." There was a tremendous amount of creative talent in this movie, and it shows. I did a lotta laughing watching it. Funny stuff.

This movie was based on the film "Louis XIX: Roi des Ondes," but I don't know anything about that movie. Just thought I'd give that movie some credit.

No, "EdTV" isn't as poignant as "The Truman Show," but it's definitely entertaining. When you have this much talent in one movie, you can't go wrong. Actually, I take that back. Remember "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"?
