"AUSTIN POWERS 2: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME"

Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me

I was in no hurry to see "Austin Powers" (the first one) when it was released theatrically. It looked really stupid... and not the funny kinda stupid either, like in "Airplane" or "The Naked Gun." It looked just plain old stupid. Months later, after it was released on video, quite a few people I know were telling me that it was really funny, and that I needed to see it. I never had the interest in seeing it, but eventually, their persuasion prevailed. So I watched it. When it was over, I felt pretty disappointed. Sure, there were a couple of funny moments, and Elizabeth Hurley was GORGEOUS, but it was just as stupid as I thought it was gonna be. Then in comes "Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me." I'm a sucker for big overhyped summer movies when they're marketed well, so I saw it... and though I have no idea why, I loved it.

Mike Myers has several roles in this movie: "Austin Powers," "Dr. Evil," and the gross, disgusting "Fat Bastard." He plays all three roles with gusto, and they're all hilarious for their own reasons. I dunno what kinda future he has without the "Austin Powers" movies, but it's very obvious that Mike Myers is an incredibly talented guy.

Aside from Myers, the rest of the cast is great, too. Heather Graham ("Rollergirl" in "Boogie Nights"), Michael York, Robert Wagner, Rob Lowe (it surprised me how good Rob Lowe was), Verne Troyer as "Mini-Me," and of course, Seth Green.

I did a lotta laughing during this movie. Some of the laughter was because of how gross some of the gags were (and they really ARE gross, believe me... I got to see a lot more of "Fat Bastard" than I really wanted to), and others were because of the odd pop culture references, and the context in which they were used. Also, the relationship between "Dr. Evil" and his son, as well as the relationship between "Dr. Evil" and "Mini-Me," are all really funny. Even though the character of "Austin Powers" is the supposed main guy, I think that "Dr. Evil" is the funniest and most interesting. Also, I have a funny feeling that "Dr. Evil" had more screen time than "Austin Powers" did.

I can't explain why I liked this movie so much, but was disappointed in the first one. Was it because I didn't expect that much outta this one? Or maybe because the original "Austin Powers" was written only by Mike Myers while the sequel was written by Mike Myers and Michael McCullers (who, strangely enough, was Mike Myers' personal assistant during the first movie). I dunno. Maybe I should just take a second look at the original.
